By Yareth Sanchez
The Varsity Hornets Baseball Team played a scrimmage game at the Hive with Castle Park on Wednesday, March 2, 2011. The boys were concentrating during warm-ups and determined to win. The bleachers were filled with fans, friends and loved ones showing support.
“We have been practicing everyday after school, three long extra hours, hitting and working to keep the in and outfielders secure in their abilities to make sure there is no mistakes and play as a unit. A lot of work has been put into practice and we plan to succeed and just go hard,” said junior Nick Nava, a center fielder for the team.
The starting nine were: Collis Hunt, Cesar Galvez, Miguel Gonzales, Ivan Hernandez, Shawn Maye-Williams, Nick Nava, Sherard Smith, Alex Valdez and Walter Wells.
When asked about his varsity team, Coach Walker said, “My plan this year is to win the league, which in Lincoln history, hasn’t happened for a while. Also, to have fun, prove that we have what it takes. Thanks to our seniors, who have put in four years of work.”
During the third inning, Gonzales pitched the ball to his catcher Hernandez, as a Castle Park opponent hit it to center field. Nava caught the ball as second baseman Valdez positioned himself for a throw to the plate. Nava threw to Valdez who cut the relay to home, where Hernandez tagged out the Castle Park runner.
With Lincoln taking the win 10 -6, “ I am happy with our results. We went out there pumped and energized, we worked hard and warmed up like crazy. We came ready to win “a lot to a little,” said senior Ahmad Johnson, left outfielder for the team.
The Varsity Hornet Baseball team is 2-2 for the regular season. Yesterday, they played La Jolla Country Day and lost 10-4. Tommorrow, March 17, they have a home game against El Cajon Valley that will begin 3:30 p.m.
