n what would have been their third CIF Division II Championship, Lincoln faced a tough loss to La Costa Canyon (LCC), who beat the Hornets 58-54 on March 2, at USD’s Jenny Craig Pavilion.  But the boys have a chance to redeem themselves against LLC tomorrow night for the Southern Championship State title.

The California Interscholastic Federation rules state that the winner and runner up from each division are both able to compete for the State title.

“It’s a great feeling to get a second chance,” stated senior Steve Martin.

On March 7, Lincoln hosted the Sunny Hill Lancers for the first round of the state championship.  The Hornets immediately dominated the Lancers scoring 17 points with in the first half.

“We needed this,” said junior Jeremiah Turner. “We shouldn’t have lost that game (LLC). This is what we need to get us back on track.”

The game ended with a 76-64 win over the Lancers.

Our boys had no time to rest because their next game was only 3 days away. On Saturday, March 10, Lincoln hosted the Tulare Union Redskins. The Redskins held their own in the first half, with Lincoln only being ahead by a few points. But the Hornets came out the second half with a new fire in their eyes completely dominating the last two quarters. The Redskins were toppled 69-49.

Lincoln traveled to Mayfair High School for their next battle on March 13. The Monsoons were coming off a 49-48 non-league win over San Joaquin.

Robinson, who scored over 30 points, said the win was easy. But it was his free-throw shot that put the Hornets on top, with a final score of 53-51.

The Hornets now have the opportunity to face LCC again on Saturday, March 17 at 4:00 p.m. in the Regional Finals for the Southern State Championship title in Ontario.

“I am looking forward to this game,” said Co-captain Tyrell Robinson. “It’s revenge, I’m not fouling out.”

“And he’s going to make his free throws,” his twin brother added.

Lincoln has a spirit bus (yellow) that is free – you need a permission slip and $10 (you will get the $10 back when you get on the bus). The first 25 people who turn in a permission slip and deposit will receive a free t-shirt. Mr. Miner (from R&M Sporting Good) has ordered a charter bus (Cost is $20 for ride only) and you must call him at 619-264-0700 or 962-0993.  Ticket prices are $10 for students with an I.D., $18 for adults, and $10 for seniors over 65. Both buses will depart behind Lincoln on Franklin (behind the parking garage/tennis courts).  You must show up at 12:30 p.m.

If the Horets win tomorrow night, they will play on March 23, for the State title once again. Go Hornets!
