S

o often, the urban youth are illustrated in a negative light in the news, educational journals, and television.  The Urban League of San Diego County has implemented a program that acknowledges and promotes the achievement of students of color and underserved populations at the 21st Annual Golden Pyramid Scholars Program.

“We make it clear to our youth and community that we believe in and support the achievements of these young men and women, these students are being honored because they understand achievement matters. They are building blocks of the community and the future”, said Kea Hagan, Urban League’s Director of Administration and Programs.

The Urban League of San Diego honors students for high academic achievement.  They are seeking nominations of students with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and above who are African-American, African, mixed ethnicity, or part of one the underserved student populations in San Diego for this special acknowledgement.

They will honor the students on Saturday, June 9, at 10 a.m., at San Diego State University’s Viejas Arena. The Urban League requests that attendees arrive early for check in, and to also visit all the booths and vendors

The ceremony is similar to a college graduation and includes motivational keynote speaker Jeff Carr, winning scholarship announcements, community resource informational booths, and prizes and gifts for the students.

Attire for the event is business; young men should wear slacks and a nice shirt. The Urban League asks that you leave sagging pants, baseball caps and do-rags at home. For young ladies they ask that they wear a dress, slacks or skirt and a nice blouse. Skintight or midriff-bearing attire should be left at home.
